Calorie Counter Using WAP and ASP

Contributed by Tim Haight

Many people are more conscious of what they eat than ever before. (I count myself as a member of that club). The biggest challenge faced by many in the quest for a healthier lifestyle is the ubiquitous “lack of time” excuse. To help out, I have created a simple WAP application that allows for one to search for different foods and get related nutritional information, based on data from the American Diabetes Association. In this article, I’ll go over the creation of the application, and in the process, make you a little bit more health conscious.

*Note: For the purpose of this article, I used a WAP emulator, located at http://tagtag.com. I also tested the application using various emulators found at http://www.gelon.net.

Before we begin, go ahead and enter the following URL on your WAP enabled phone: http://home.1asphost.com/twhaight/index.wml. This is a live sample of the project at hand. You should see something similar to the image below:

WAP

Test it out! Enter the food name (even part of a food item) in the Food box, and click the Submit Food link. The application will return information about every food in the database with that search criteria.  For this example, I entered apple in the Food box, and got the results below.

WAP

As you can see, it returned several foods containing apple in it.  For canned apple juice, a 1 cup serving contains 0 grams of fat, 115 calories, 29 rams of carbohydrates, and 0 grams of cholesterol.

If you arrow down, you would see the following information on raw apples:

Description: APPLES, RAW, PEELED, SLICED
Serving: 1 CUP
Fat: 0
Calories: 65
Carbs: 16
Cholesterol: 0

This application is composed of the following elements:

  1. Web hosting
  2. An Access database named Food.mdb
  3. Index.wml – the main WAP page
  4. Search.asp – contains the SQL query and results page
  5. Adojavas.inc – contains the ADO constraints

Subseafloor Observatories Installed to Run Dynamic Experiments

Marine geologists have returned from two months at sea off British Columbia, Canada, where they installed two observatories in the ocean floor to run innovative experiments at the bottom of the sea.

The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) "Juan de Fuca Ridge-Flank Hydrogeology" expedition--Expedition 327--left Victoria, Canada, on July 9th and returned on September 5th.
